Fig4s.gif (51599 bytes) Double Castellorizan wedding of brother and sister Jack and Evelyn Dioktidi held on the 9th of November 1930 in Sydney.

Many of the people pictured are the descendants of Castellorizan patriot Father Theodosi Simonidis who lowered the Turkish flag and raised the Greek flag during the 1914/18 war when the Turks were still occupying the island, and was involved in many attempts to liberate the island.

Kytherians Minas Emmanual Kosmas and John Andronicus were some of the earliest settlers and like their fellow countrymen would entertain some of the newer Kytherian settlers.

The picture depicts a store they owned in Sydney.

Cafe jointly owned by Apostolis Valsamis and John Kennelos at 39 Bourke Street, Melbourne, circa 1916.

Valsamis came from the Greek island of Samos, arriving in Australia on the 29th of June, 1912.

Kennelos came from Pirieus in Athens, arriving in Australia in December 1910.

They went into partnership in 1915.

Alexandratos was born in Ithaca in 1881, arriving in Melbourne in 1904.

Politis came from the island of Leukas to Australia in 1901.

   
The Melbourne cafe pictured was owned by Antoniou Levakatsas, who was born in Ithica in 1863.

Levakatsas was the president of the Greek community in Melbourne in 1916.

In 1941 the NSW government declared 'Greek Day' celebrations in honor of the heroism displayed by the Greek nation in warding off the NAZI invasion of the country during the second world war. The celebration was aimed at raising money for the Australian war effort. Fig37g.gif (23098 bytes)
   
Fig38s.gif (75944 bytes) During the Greek Day celebrations, the NSW government allowed official marches to take place through the streets of Sydney with young Greek men in their national Greek costume.

The appeal of the Greek day celebrations reached the NSW country towns and many of the Kytherian families contributed to the appeal.

Pictured here are the Greek families in Tenterfield, NSW participated in the day's celebrations.
